The UNU Library will host a book launch for Intellectual Property and Public Health in the Developing World by Monirul Azam .This book explores how to design national patent laws and undertake the required institutional and infrastructural reforms that are optimal in terms of enabling developing countries and least developed countries (LDCs) to promote innovation in their domestic pharmaceutical sectors and ensure access to medicines. It analyses experiences in implementing patent laws compliant with the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) in Brazil, China, India and South Africa, and explores potential policy options for the LDCs through a case study on the pharmaceutical sector in Bangladesh. It also examines policies for the LDCs, not only to promote their local pharmaceutical industry and ensure access to medicines, but also to explore potential plans of action to progress towards innovation and compliance.
